Lyon County CELL PHONES FOR SENIORS Program
Lyon County Cell Phones for Seniors program is designed to provide seniors a means to alert others to an emergency situation. Lyon County R.S.V.P. receives donated used cell phones from community donors, reconditions them and provides them to senior citizens free of charge. These phones are capable of making emergency 911 calls if used properly and if they are within a signal tower receiving area. These cell phones can only be used for 911 emergency calls and there is no monthly subscriber or other cost associated with them.
The cell phones can be used anywhere an appropriate cellular tower can receive a signal. Although many individuals have landline phones or other alert systems, many of these require a person be within a certain distance for them to work. The cell phone provides an alternate method to summon help in event of an emergency. They are lightweight and easily attach to belts or fit into aprons, pockets, or purses. This gives a senior the freedom and mobility to enjoy the outdoors, drive, work in the yard, and other activities without worrying about being too far away from a landline phone.
It is important to remember:
Cell Phones for Seniors phones can only be used for 911 emergency calls
Cell Phones for Seniors phones do not have a return phone number and people cannot call you back on this phone.
During emergency calls, be sure to give your location first and DO NOT hang up.
You must check and keep your phone batteries charged for the cell phone to work.

Lyon County VIAL of L.I.F.E. Program
Vial of L.I.F.E. is a FREE home kit for you to provide vital information to emergency medical personnel (firefighters, paramedics and hospital staff) in time of a crisis. By completing the Vial of L.I.F.E. form and maintaining it in your home, you can provide emergency personnel with vital lifesaving information even if you are unable to communicate. It is important that you keep this information accurate, up to date, and stored in the upper shelf of your refrigerator.
How Does the VIAL of L.I.F.E. Program Work?
Each person in the household should complete a VIAL of L.I.F.E. kit.
A medical information sheet listing your current medications, medical conditions, emergency contacts, and other relevant information should be filled out and placed in the supplied vial container. The vial is then placed on an upper shelf in your home refrigerator where it will be easily visible in a time of crisis. A magnet is placed on upper right hand corner of the refrigerator to alert emergency responders that the information is there.
A release of information form is provided and when completed it should be returned to the R.S.V.P. office who will in turn forward it to the Emporia Police Department. This form gives the Emporia Police Department permission to flag your house as a Vial of L.I.F.E. participant so that they can alert emergency personnel that you have a Vial of L.I.F.E. before they get to your house. This can save precious time in an emergency.
